You can buy stuff but my issue is a rank lack of skill.

Started in on SOMA ("survival" horror from the same studio who made Penumbra and Amnesia).

So far it's decent, really decent. There's a lot of interesting scenarios going on.

The premise is that you, the protagonist, have recently been in an automobile accident that has left you with a brain condition that, left untreated, could kill you in a matter of months. Luckily you've just scheduled an appointment with a graduate neurology student who might be on the brink of something big.

Upon arrival to the appointment, the man you meet sits you in a chair, loads a bunch of hardware onto your head, and fires up the brain scan. Suddenly, the power seizes up and keels over, leaving you in darkness. Once you wrench off the junk attached to your melon, you find yourself completely alone in a degraded albeit futuristic facility. Evidence in the first few rooms points to some sort of catastrophe, and the date on the memo is over 100 years in the future.

Such is the premise, and there's another strange incident that I just experienced that kind of left me shaken in terms of outcome. At a certain point of the game, in order to progress and achieve communication with a survivor of this "incident," you find yourself face-to-face with a robot that seems to think it's human. It identifies itself as "Carl Semken," begs for medical treatment due to it's injuries, and you can engage in extended conversation with the robot for a while. Despite trying to convince it of it's artificial condition, ultimately it's a fruitless endeavor. No matter what you say, the robot things you're loony tunes and that it's a human being in dire need of a medic.

It's at this point that you're faced with a non-decision. In order to redirect power to the appropriate door in order to continue, you can either A: reroute power through the hookups the robot is locked into, thus causing it agonizing pain and eventually leaving it in a catatonic state, or B: shutdown the area the robot is in, effectively putting it offline permanently and "killing" it.

Oh, and on the way to the door, you pass by a corpse that's been drilled through the brain-pan and has a staff ID on him. His name? Carl Semken.

Shit, that's heavy.  I saw the opening stages of that game in a let's play series, but decided I'd rather put it off until I could play it for myself.  Sounds like I made a good call.

In other news I found out a couple days ago that my fiance had been holding out on me and had gotten Portal 2 for practically nothing through a sale and coupon a month ago.  Just finished it tonight.  Clever little game.  J.K. Simmons was a nice touch.  I haven't played the first one, so I was probably missing a good bit of context, but I still had a good time.

What stuff are you guys into from pre-PS2 era? The other thing I've been wondering for awhile is if there is some sort of emulation service that takes classic games and lets you play multiplayer with people online...

Played Civ 5 for so long that I'm considering just playing Civ 5 from now on and not moving until I die.

At least until Civ VI comes out later in the year.
