2016

Well lads, the final quarter is rolling around. What sweet tunes have you been jamming this year? Any recs? I've fucked off music listening from 2016, mostly sticking to old DSBM and second wave records.

Although the latest record from sylvaine is decent.

Previously I had been unfamiliar with this project, so when I heard the name being thrown around (with the addendum that Neige contributed drums or something), my assumption was that Audrey Sylvaine had begun a new project. Tragically I was wrong. Turns out this is a one-woman project from Norway, but interestingly there's much in common with Alcest in terms of the overall sound.

So I checked out her first record and mostly I felt reminded of Evanesence, probably mostly because of the vocals, but the predominate emotion it evoked (despite being such a seemingly "emotional" record) was total enveloping boredom.

The follow-up sounds suspiciously similar but it benefits from improved songwriting, the ideas feel more fleshed out and varied. Unlike the first record also, this one pretty much jumps the shark completely and steps into black metal territory, incorporating shrieking and blastbeats in the ethereal post-rock style she's carved out. The vocals aren't bad, a little shaky at times, but they're better than some I've heard. Almost like a mix of Varg and Neige.

It's not breaking into any new territory, it's really derivative and at the end of the day it sounds like Alcest but with female vocals.

Would listen again though. It's head and shoulders above most material released in this mash-up subgenre.

I'll go through everything again but off top Skuggsjá is probably my favorite release this year. Forndom also put out a great record.
I'm not sure how many metal projects I've been impressed with though. I wasn't really into Cobalt and D666's latest was disappointing as well. Forteresse dropped something but I can't remember if it was good. Nails' meme record was not bad

Negura Bunget, Asphyx, and Pallbearer all released albums recently. Dark Funeral's 2016 release sort of lives up to their prior album from 2009 when they suddenly stopped sucking ass.

Here's three I really enjoyed. Not my top 3, but certainly close. I'd probably say my number one was SubRosa. That shit is depressing.
